Put on your hat for a cause

Hats can gather dust during hot summer months, but Saturday afternoon is a time to wipe off the cobwebs and show your favorite topper off.
Faith Temple Ministries is hosting a “Pretty Hat Luncheon” at noon today for a $10 donation per ticket to raise funds for the charity work of its women’s ministry.
“We’ve decorated our entire fellowship hall in hats,” luncheon chairwoman LaVerne Flythe said. “We’ll also be having a hat parade, and people will model their own hats.”
Flythe has been collecting hats since 1974 and is using her own 300-plus hats to decorate the hall.
“I’ve been collecting since 1974,” Flythe said. “My husband took our second bedroom and has allowed me to put all my hats and pocketbooks in it. I just love my hats. To me, it makes the whole look and sets the tone for my day.”
After Flythe attended a hat luncheon at a Virginia Beach church, she knew it was a fundraiser she had to put on, as well.
“I thought it was a great fundraiser,” Flythe said. “Hats appeal to women who don’t even wear them often. It’s like dress up, for adults.”
The fundraiser will include a speaker, door prizes and gifts, a praise dance and a menu of baked or friend chicken, yam casserole, string beans and different cakes.
“All the money goes to our ministry so we can support our community,” Flythe said. “We help any need we know of that arises in the community, from hospitalizations to clothes to paying the electricity bill.”
There is no one they won’t help, and there is no one this fundraiser excludes.
“Everyone is invited,” Flythe said. “We were hoping some men would model hats — there are some fabulous hats for men — but they can come and watch the women flaunt theirs, too.”
There will be four hat judges and first-, second- and third-place trophies for the best in show.
The Fellowship Hall is located at 623 Brook Avenue.
Tickets will be sold at the door.
