Suffolk Publications LLC announced Wednesday that Susan Holley, the company’s director of advertising, has been named general manager and that Suffolk native R.E. “Res” Spears III has been named editor of the Suffolk News-Herald, Suffolk Living and related online products.
Both promotions are effective today.
Spears succeeds Tim Reeves, who has been named editor of The Selma (Ala.) Times Journal, which, like Suffolk Publications, is an affiliate of Boone Newspapers Inc. of Tuscaloosa, Ala.
“Sue and Res have earned the opportunity to lead Suffolk Publications and to continue the outstanding work of Tim Reeves,” said Steve Stewart, vice president of Boone Newspapers and publisher of The Tidewater News in Franklin, where Spears worked previously as a reporter.
Holley, who came to Suffolk in November 2009 from South Carolina, is a newspaper veteran with experience in Ohio, Florida and South Carolina.
“I have had the honor of working with a staff that delivers talent, dedication and work ethic every single day,” Holley said. “I am pleased to accept this opportunity to become the general manager of the Suffolk News-Herald, because of them, the businesses we serve and our community.”
Spears joined the staff of the Suffolk News-Herald as managing editor in October 2008. He has spent more than 20 years in community journalism. He and his wife, Annette, live in Suffolk, where his mother is still a resident, as well.
Reeves, whose last day will be Thursday, said his tenure in Suffolk has been “short but fulfilling.”
“I have had the luxury of working with some of the finest people here and wish them and the company nothing but the best moving forward,” he said.
Staff members learned of the leadership transition last week.
“I am excited to be blessed with the opportunity to serve as editor of my hometown newspaper, and I look forward to working with our talented staff to continue the fine work that Tim did in developing our editorial products,” Spears said.
Suffolk Publications publishes the daily Suffolk News-Herald; Suffolk Living, a quarterly lifestyle magazine; www.suffolknewsherald.com; and other websites.
