A Suffolk church is celebrating its two-year anniversary and the grand opening of its new building this weekend.

CrossPointe Freewill Baptist Church met for nearly two years after its formation in conference rooms at the Hilton Garden Inn. Recently, the church purchased the old Sidney F. Harrell Funeral Home at 2460 Pruden Blvd. and converted it into a church building. At the time, Pastor David Sexton said he hoped to do more community outreach — something that was difficult to do without their own building.

“Once we get into our own building, we want to do a whole lot more,” Sexton said in May.

This weekend, the church is making good on its promise. A community day will be held at the church today from noon to 3 p.m. All activities are free to the public, and include a cookout, children’s activities and a 42-foot inflatable obstacle course.

On Sunday, the grand opening and anniversary service will begin with Sunday school for all ages at 9:30 a.m. and worship service at 10:45 a.m. Sexton will continue a series of messages from the book of Joshua titled “Claiming Canaan.” A meal also will be provided after the Sunday service.

“We want to be a blessing and be a help to our community,” Sexton said.
