After 85 years, the original Mighty Pearly Gates still are showing the way for gospel enthusiasts all over.
The group was organized by Pop Porter in 1925 with a group of men who wanted to sing gospel. Since then, the group has recorded several albums, had numerous hits and distributed its work throughout the world. They’ll be celebrating their anniversary with a service this Sunday.
“We’ve been out here singing gospel for 85 years,” said James Holiman, a member of the group for nearly 40 years. “Hopefully, we can continue.”
The group currently has eight members, Holiman said.
“We try to do all things we can for the community,” he said, adding the group has been an inspiration to many with its repertoire of gospel music.
“I have seen people come away from the program enlightened, ready to give their life to Christ,” Holiman said.
The celebration service will be held at 5 p.m. at St. Timothy Baptist Church, 1613 E. Washington St. The group Harmonizing Echoes will be the guests. For more information, call 237-1703.
