Former Lady Warrior earns hoop honors

Mount Olive sophomore guard Andrea Jones (Nansemond River) earned second-team All-Conference Carolinas honors for the regular season and a spot on the conference’s All-Tournament Team as the Lady Trojans finished second for the season and in this past weekend’s tournament.

Mt. Olive won two games before falling 83-68 to No. 1 Barton in the final. Jones scored a team-high 14 points in the final. The Lady Trojans finish the season 21-8.

Jones averaged 14.7 points per game and 1.9 steals per game while making a team-leading 57 three-pointers and shooting 82.5 percent at the foul line.

Georgetown’s women’s basketball team ran into No. 1 Connecticut and fell 59-43 in the quarterfinals of the Big East Tournament in Hartford, Conn. Sunday.

The Lady Hoyas (22-10) earned a bye through the first round and beat Syracuse 61-60 in the second round on Saturday. Sophomore guard TaShauna Rodgers (King’s Fork) scored 18 points against Syracuse and 17 against the Lady Huskies.

Georgetown, ranked No. 21 in the country, awaits word on a likely NCAA Tournament berth. The tourney field will be announced Monday, March 14.

On the men’s side of Big East Tournament hoops, Marquette (18-13, 9-9) is the No. 11 seed and meets No. 14 Providence in the first round Tuesday at 9 p.m. at Madison Square Garden in a key game for Marquette’s NCAA Tournament chances.

Freshman forward Davante Gardner (King’s Fork) is averaging 7.9 minutes, 4.0 points and 1.7 rebounds a game for Marquette.

No. 7 Cincinnati (24-7, 11-7) enters the tournament in the second round Wednesday evening against the winner of Tuesday’s Villanova vs. South Florida game.

The Bearcats come into the tournament off a 69-47 win over Georgetown Saturday in Cincinnati.

Sophomore guard JaQuon Parker (King’s Fork) is averaging 9.1 minutes and 1.4 points per game for UC.

Hunter

Moving into spring sports, Apprentice freshman Ben Hunter (Lakeland) won the individual medalist honors at the Marlin Invitational golf tournament Saturday-Sunday at Virginia Beach’s Bayville Golf Club.

Hunter shot 70 and 78 (4 over par) to go to a playoff for the individual title. He made an eight-foot birdie putt on the second playoff hole to win.

Norfolk State swept visiting Hofstra on the baseball diamond with a 3-2 win and a 5-4 win on Saturday.

Senior outfielder John Rasberry (Lakeland/Greenbrier Christian) hits second in the Spartan order. He connected for two hits in the 3-2 contest.

For the season, Rasberry’s hitting .406 with eight runs, nine RBI, three sacrifices and a .512 on-base percentage.

NSU (5-5) travels to play Longwood Tuesday before hosting Penn State in a four-game series starting Friday at 1 p.m.

Mt. Olive junior Sarah Saunders (Lakeland) pitched a complete-game victory as part of a Lady Trojan (8-11) doubleheader sweep versus Fayetteville St. on Friday.

Saunders gave up two hits and no earned runs while striking out 10 in Mt. Olive’s 5-1 win. Saunders improved her season record to 3-5.
