Rodgers nets 26 in Lady Hoya tourney win

Georgetown rolled through the first round of the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament Sunday with a 65-49 win over Princeton. The No. 5-seeded Lady Hoyas will meet No. 4 Maryland Tuesday at 7 p.m. in College Park, Md.
Sophomore guard TaShauna “Sugar” Rodgers (King’s Fork) poured in a game-high 26 points to lead the Lady Hoyas. Rodgers hit four three-pointers to go with eight rebounds, four assists and three steals.
Georgetown (23-10) got out to a 27-9 lead in the first 14:56 of action. The Lady Hoyas led by as many as 26 points on a couple occasions in the second half.
The Lady Hoyas and Lady Terrapins are playing for a spot in the Sweet 16 in Philadelphia. The Georgetown/Maryland winner will play the Connecticut/Purdue winner Sunday.
In men’s March Madness, No. 11 Marquette upset No. 3 Syracuse 66-62 on Sunday in Cleveland to make the Sweet 16.
Syracuse led 59-56 before Marquette’s Jae Crowder made a three-pointer to tie the game with 2:25 remaining. Darius Johnson-Odom’s three-pointer put Marquette ahead 62-59 with 0:26 left.
Freshman forward Davante Gardner (King’s Fork) played six minutes, getting two points and two rebounds for the Golden Eagles.
Marquette (22-14) advances to play No. 2 North Carolina in Newark, N.J. Friday.
No. 3 Connecticut beat No. 6 Cincinnati 69-58 in a third-round game Saturday in Washington, D.C.
Sophomore guard JaQuon Parker (King’s Fork) scored two points in four minutes for UC. The Bearcats finish the season 26-9.
