Grassfield wins district golf title by 8 shots

Nansemond River’s Griffin Genier watches his shot from the woods toward the green on No. 8 at Sleepy Hole Golf Course during the Southeastern District Tournament on Tuesday. Genier shot an 82 as the Warriors finished second to Grassfield. Grassfield, Nansemond River and Great Bridge advance as team qualifiers for the Eastern Region Tournament.

The Southeastern District Golf Tournament didn’t go according to plan for Nansemond River, but at least the Warriors will have another shot.

As the Warrior golfers played a chipping contest on the practice putting green following their rounds Tuesday at Sleepy Hole Golf Course, at least the fun served as practice as well since Nansemond River’s 9-0 season record and district season title put them into the Eastern Region Tournament anyway.

Edging the Warriors on both days, Grassfield won the tournament title by eight shots, 623-631, over runner-up Nansemond River during two tough days for everyone in the field to play Sleepy Hole. Grassfield beat the Warriors by three shots on Monday and by five shots on Tuesday.

Grassfield’s top two players led the way, finishing one-two individually. Mike Sweeney won the district medalist honors with a one-over par total from rounds of 74 and 71. Steven Decker was second a shot back. Nansemond River senior Travis Johnson was third with rounds of 76 and 73.

The final round of the tournament proved a tournament is never over and there’s always something to shoot for.

King’s Fork’s No. 1 player, Andrew Womack, shot a 92 on Monday. In most district tourneys, a score in the 90s would leave a player too far out of contention for an individual regional spot.

Womack rebounded and took 13 shots off his first round score, for a 79, to make the cut for the Eastern Region Tournament by one stroke.

Lakeland senior Ryan Sigler gets to keep his season going as well. He carded scores of 78 and 89 to be one of the seven individual golfers, from squads other than Grassfield, NR and third-place Great Bridge, moving on to regionals.

NR sophomore Bryce Strong shot a 76 to finish fifth individually. Griffin Genier and Shanice Mason each shot 82s to make up a 313 team total for Nansemond River’s second round.
