Truck fire closes South Quay Road

South Quay Road was closed most of Wednesday evening because of a fire in a tractor-trailer carrying flammable chemicals.

The call originally came in before 6:30 p.m. There was heavy smoke coming from the tractor-trailer, which had pulled to the side of the road, city spokeswoman Debbie George said.

The roadway was shut down, and traffic was routed around the area.

Because of the chemicals the truck was carrying, the regional hazardous materials team was called to the scene. George did not know specifically which chemicals the truck had on board, but it was believed to be three different products, all liquid and flammable.

The situation was stabilized just before 8:30 p.m., but the road remained closed at that time.
