After two years of work, the Greater Chuckatuck Historical Foundation will celebrate the release of its book on the village and its history.
The launch party for “Chuckatuck: Crossroads in Time” will take place from 2 to 4 p.m. Dec. 3 and 4 at the Chuckatuck Volunteer Fire Department.
Lynn Rose, the chairwoman of the Historical Foundation, said she is excited the book is finally ready to be released.
“We have worked so hard on this,” she said. “A lot of people have been involved. I’m very excited that we’ve got the book.”
Rose said the group decided to have a launch party to get the word out about the book and invite those who helped put it together and the public to celebrate its release.
“Some people do autograph sessions to introduce a book,” she said. “But we had quite a few people who wrote portions of our books, so we decided to do it this way to announce the book.”
The hardback book, which includes a DVD of pictures and interviews that didn’t make it into print, has 240 pages and more than 400 photographs covering the history of Chuckatuck.
“We wanted to concentrate on as much history as we could accumulate,” Rose said. “There are so many interesting facts about the Chuckatuck area.”
She said approximately 35 volunteers dedicated hours of their time to put the book together.
Some of the topics in the book include the Suffolk escarpment, the Nansemond Indian tribe and the neighboring villages.
Even someone who isn’t a history buff or a Chuckatuck resident, Rose said, can enjoy the book.
“Chuckatuck has a feel to it that isn’t prevalent in a lot of places — that hometown, community feel,” she said. “It has this special feel that the people have indicated and makes them feel at home. I think people outside of the area would be interested in that part of it in addition to the history.”
Copies of “Chuckatuck: Crossroads in Time” will be available at the book launch party for $40. The book also can be ordered online at www.chuckatuckhistory.com.
