Stancill wins journalism awards

Jane Stancill, daughter of Phyllis Stancill Pruden and the late Godfrey Stancill of Suffolk, received two important awards recently from the North Carolina Press Association for her work at the News & Observer in Raleigh, N.C.
Stancill and two fellow N&O employees won a first-place award in deadline news reporting. She also won the Duke University Green-Rossiter Award for Work in Higher Education along with three other N&O staff writers.
Stancill is a graduate of Nansemond-Suffolk Academy and the University of Virginia. She received her master’s degree in journalism from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill.
She works as an editor and writer for the News & Observer, covering North Carolina higher education.
Stancill’s father, Godfrey, was publisher of the Suffolk News-Herald from 1969 until the early ‘80s.
Stancill is also the stepdaughter of the late Peter DeWitt Pruden Jr. of Suffolk.
