Following are this week’s Suffolk News-Herald Player of the Week nominees:
- Robert Fitzwater, sophomore for Nansemond River High School baseball — He held Oscar Smith High School from the mound with eight strikeouts in six innings and hurt the Tigers at the plate by going 2-for-3 with a solo home run in the Warriors’ 7-0 win.
- Noah Johnson, senior for King’s Fork High School baseball — He put on a remarkable display at Harbor Park against Lakeland High School, going 5-for-5 with an RBI and two stolen bases on offense. On defense, he caught all three outs in the fifth inning, a vital stand to protect a one-run lead that the Bulldogs eventually extended to an eight-run win.
- Trevor Riggs, junior for Nansemond River High School baseball — He shined against the top-ranked team in the district, the undefeated Great Bridge High School Wildcats. Despite the Warriors’ loss, he went 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs.
- Sydney Wash, sophomore for King’s Fork High School softball — She had six strikeouts and shut out the vaunted Hickory High School Lady Hawks for the second straight year. Later in the week against Lakeland High School, she threw a one-hitter with seven strikeouts and went 2-for-4 from the plate with an RBI in a 14-0 win.
