Meals on Wheels to hold golf tourney

Golfers looking for an excuse to get on the course can support a charity while they play at the annual Meals on Wheels golf tournament next month.
Registrations are due Sept. 2 for the Sept. 12 tournament. The four-person captain’s choice tournament will take place at the Nansemond River Golf Club, 1000 Hillpoint Blvd.
“We hold this annually to raise funds for meal delivery to need-based recipients in Suffolk and Isle of Wight County,” executive director Roseland Worrell said. “Just one person playing would help fund a person receiving meals for a month.”
Registration on-site will take place from noon to 12:45 p.m. that day, with a lunch by Chick-fil-A. Shotgun start will take place at 1 p.m., and a buffet dinner will be served at 5:30 p.m. Awards and prizes are available.
Three corporate sponsors have signed on, and the organization is looking for more. Hole and cart sponsorships also are available.
“It’s just a good time,” Worrell said of the tournament.
This will be the second tournament held by the organization, which delivers meals to homebound people of any age in the area.
