Boy Scouts name new officers

Several men from Suffolk and the surrounding area have been elected as officers for the Colonial Virginia Council of the Boy Scouts of America.

Jeff Wassmer, chief executive officer and chairman of the Board of Spectrum was elected to serve as the Council’s President for the upcoming year. Wassmer, a 20-year Air Force Veteran, also serves as chairman of the Virginia Port Authority Board of Commissioners.

“As an Eagle Scout, I can think of no greater way to give back to a program that has given me so much,” Wassmer said.

“To be an Eagle Scout is to live life with honor, responsibility, obligation, and service, assuring that the trail remains intact for future generations of Scouts. I feel this obligation of service to the future of our county, and the obligation to prepare others for life.”

The new officers will serve Scouts and adult volunteers in 10 cities and 11 counties throughout Hampton Roads.

Also elected as officers were the following:

  • Mike Fry as Council commissioner — Fry is a program manager with Newport News Shipbuilding.
  • David Grose as treasurer — Grose is an accounting manager with Jonesz Blechman, Woltz and Kelly.
  • Joe Verser as vice president of administration — Verser is a partner with Heath, Overby and Verser, PLC.
  • Ralph Howell as vice president of district operations — Howell is a dentist with R.L. Howell & Associates.
  • George Dudley as vice president of governance. Dudley is president and chief executive officer with Bayport Credit Union.
  • Andy Mullins as vice president of membership. Mullins is an attorney with D. Wayne Moore Law.
  • Bill Spence as vice president of programs. Spence is president of St. George Brewing Company.
  • Bill Goggins as vice president of properties. Goggins is vice president and CEO of Clancy & Theys Construction Co.
  • Travers Edwards as vice president of management. Edwards is a physician at J. Travers Edwards, M.D.
