More than 200 pairs of young feet in the area will be warmer this winter, thanks to the generosity of Quality Custom Distribution Services Inc. and the GSF Foundation.

QCD, a subsidiary of Golden State Foods, along with the GSF Foundation, which is designed to improve the lives of children and families in need in the areas where GSF associates live and work, hosted four events recently in which they delivered new pairs of shoes, warm coats and sets of hats and gloves to local elementary school children in need.

More than 200 pairs of shoes and socks, 96 coats and 96 sets of hats and gloves were provided to more than 200 children from P.W. Moore Elementary in Elizabeth City, N.C., S.P. Morton Elementary School in Franklin and Hillpoint and Elephant’s Fork elementary schools in Suffolk during the month of December.

The new pairs of shoes and coats are distributed through the Golden State Foods Foundation “Best Foot Forward” and “Coats for Kids” programs.

The shoes were chosen to fit specific recipients, and they were matched with a pair of socks and wrapped as a holiday gift for the children to open.

The sets of hats and gloves were collected throughout the year at various fundraising events held by QCD Suffolk associates, including its “Meals for Mittens” event, which took place in March.

“Winter is an especially difficult season for families experiencing financial hardship,” said Jerry Wilson, operations manager for QCD in Suffolk.

“Without the generous donations of our associates and partners through these programs, these children would not have the means to purchase much-needed items to help them stay warm and participate in school-based physical education programs and extracurricular activities. Our goal for 2014 is to spread our reach into more of the areas where our associates live and work so that we can further support children and families in need.”

To date, the GSF Foundation has raised more than $25 million for more than 550 children’s charities and elementary schools serving its most challenging neighborhoods.

As many as 80 percent of GSF and QCD associates support the GSF Foundation through personal involvement and contribution in 27 committees across the United States. Last year alone, GSF Foundation volunteers donated more than 125,000 service hours to others.

Established in 2002, the Foundation is funded and run by GSF associate volunteers and supported by its business partners, community partners and customers.

QCD has 11 distribution centers around the nation, including the one in Suffolk. QCD’s customers include Chick-fil-A, Chipotle, Starbucks, Seattle’s Best Coffee and Rita’s.
