Player of the Week nominees

Following are this week’s nominees for the Duke Automotive-Suffolk News-Herald Player of the Week:

  • Michael Betts, junior for Nansemond River High School swimming: This week at the Ironclad Conference championships, he won all four of his events and qualified for the state championships in each of them, as well. The list includes the 200-yard individual medley, 100-yard breaststroke, the 200-yard medley relay and 400-yard freestyle relay. He broke school records in the individual events.
  • Khadedra Croker, senior for King’s Fork High School basketball: She continues her dominance and makes the triple-double seem routine. In Thursday’s 58-36 home win over Nansemond River High School, she had 24 points, 20 rebounds and 14 blocks. During Tuesday’s 60-40 win at Heritage High School, she had 27 points, 18 boards and 14 blocks. She had 19 points in Monday’s 68-23 home win against Phoebus High School.
  • Harper Birdsong, sophomore for Nansemond-Suffolk Academy: She helped her team to continue its winning streak with valuable, well-rounded road performances from the point. On Friday at Cape Henry Collegiate School, she had 20 points, eight rebounds and six assists. On Thursday at Norfolk Collegiate School, she had 12 points, six assists, five boards, three steals and two blocks. On Tuesday at Norfolk Academy, she had 12 points, seven assists, five boards and three blocks.
