The YMCA of South Hampton Roads is hosting an open day for families at Suffolk’s Camp Arrowhead on Saturday.

From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., parents and children can learn all about summer camp activities at the facility, 275 Kenyon Road, according to Matt Lewis, operations director with the YMCA.

“It’s a day of camp for families,” Lewis said. “The whole idea is to introduce people to camp and some of the great activities we do at camp.”

Camp Arrowhead’s School-Age Adventure Camp, for rising first- through fifth-graders, involves a host of fun activities, including the Alpine Tower, archery, arts and crafts, horticulture, team-building on the challenge course, hiking and nature, music, drama, rifle instruction, swimming and swim lessons, and sports such as soccer and softball.

Teen Adventure Camp, for rising sixth- through ninth-graders, involves a week of traveling to local venues for activities like rock climbing, kayaking, hiking, swimming and various sports.

“The whole idea is teaching kids to be part of something bigger than themselves,” Lewis said.

During the open day, camp staff will be available to answer parent questions, and families will receive 50 percent off camp fees if they sign up that day.

Lewis noted that Camp Arrowhead is a fully licensed camp through the state of Virginia, and also accredited by the American Camp Association.

“As far as I know, Camp Arrowhead is the only camp in the city of Suffolk accredited by the American Camp Association,” he said.

Food will be provided during the open house, which will also include music and games.
