Player of the Week nominees

Following are this week’s nominees for the Duke Automotive-Suffolk News-Herald Player of the Week:

  • Ryan Stalnaker, senior for Lakeland High School baseball: His bat was productive all week for the Cavaliers. He registered two triples and two runs batted in during Monday’s 12-0 win at Heritage High School. On Tuesday, he went 3-for-5, with two RBIs and three runs scored in a 16-6 win at Phoebus High School. Thursday, he had two hits and two runs scored in a 9-8 win at Denbigh High School.
  • Sydney Wash, junior for King’s Fork High School softball: She had a stellar week on the mound, punctuated on Tuesday by her first perfect game, in which host Denbigh High School fell 15-0. She threw 14 strikeouts. In Monday’s 13-0 win at Phoebus High School, she allowed one hit and struck out 12. Despite Wednesday’s loss to undefeated Great Bridge High School, she allowed only two runs, striking out seven.
  • Brandon Witherow, senior for Nansemond-Suffolk Academy lacrosse: He was instrumental in his team reaching its first state championship game since 2001. On Tuesday, he aided a 14-5 quarterfinal home victory over Virginia Episcopal School by recording five goals and one assist. He produced a hat trick in Friday’s 12-10 semifinal win over North Cross School at Randolph-Macon College.
