With Suffolk withering under hot conditions this week, folks have been escaping the heat the best way they can.

At the Steeplechase neighborhood pool at Bennett’s Creek on Thursday afternoon, when the mercury tipped 93 at Suffolk Executive Airport, residents cooled off by taking a plunge.

“It also wears the children out,” said Katie Lamas of the pool’s allure. She was taking a dip with her niece, 2-year-old Lacey Lamas.

“I’m from Texas, so I’m kind of used to the heat,” she added.

While the temperature Thursday reached 93, humidity meant the heat index tipped 100. The situation was about the same on Wednesday.

Over the next few days, conditions are forecast to cool off slightly, with a slight chance of thunderstorms Friday and showers likely Saturday.

A high of 83 is predicted for Sunday, with the slight chance of thunderstorms.
