Fire scorches wheat field

About 25 acres of a wheat field were destroyed on Sunday when a combine working the field had a mechanical issue and sparked the flames. No firefighters were injured in the blaze.

Suffolk firefighters on Sunday extinguished a fire that burned about 25 acres of a wheat field, according to a city press release.

The call came in at 3:25 p.m., and the first unit arrived on scene in the 5800 block of O’Kelly Drive about six minutes later. The fire was brought under control at 4:09 p.m. with no injuries to firefighters.

The cause of the fire was determined to be an issue with the combine that was working the field, according to the city press release.

Suffolk units responding to the blaze included Engines 4, 7 and 8 and Brush Trucks 1, 7 and 8, as well as Battalion 1. Carrsville Fire Department came to Suffolk’s aid with two units.
