Daniel E. Barnes, an Army ROTC cadet at Old Dominion University, has been involved in Cadet Language and Cultural Immersion Training during his first training deployment as a cadet.

After a week-long training session at Fort Knox, Ky., Barnes and other selected cadets were deployed to partner nations, where they were immersed in the local cultures and languages.

Barnes deployed to Mongolia, where he trained and workedwith soldiers from Mongolia and the United States. He participated in an engineering project in which he helped repair and refurbish a school. He also visited a Buddhist monastery and local monuments and landmarks in the nation’s capital.

The selected cadets spent three weeks involved in assisting with Army missions ranging from community outreach projects to teaching English to local children or host country military personnel.

They benefitted from the total immersion in another culture and helped build positive relationships while helping the people of partner nations.

Barnes is a 2004 graduate of Nansemond River High School.
