Volunteers needed for Chuckatuck cleanup

The Greater Oakland & Chuckatuck Civic League is calling not only on members but also on the general public to help clean up some streets on Saturday.
Opal McCleod, its president, said the civic league concentrates on “doing things that will enhance the community.”
“We decided to have two cleanups per year to help beautify Chuckatuck, Sandy Bottom and Oakland,” McCleod said. “There are about 12 streets that we clean up.”
Volunteers will meet at the corner of Godwin Boulevard and Birch Lane — the staging area — at 9 a.m., before fanning out to collect trash and spruce things up.
Folks can turn up with their own gear — gloves, orange vest, hat and long tongs to pick up the trash are recommended — or call Opal McCleod at 241-1850 so the civic league can ensure it has enough supplies to distribute.
McCleod said they’d like to have some male volunteers to provide some heft — some of the areas are “heavily littered,” including with old tires.
Moore Farm Lane is a “heavy dumping ground,” she said, and the volunteers will clean up all the way through to Everets Road.
“It usually takes two hours, at the most,” McCleod said of the undertaking. “It depends on how many (volunteers) we have. Last year we had about 15.
“We do it as a civic league, but we really like to have the community participate as well.”
The civic league meets at the Chuckatuck Volunteer Fire Department building on Kings Highway every third Monday at 7 p.m.
“Our goal is to let the citizens and the city know we are going to do whatever it takes to make our area safe to live and work,” McCleod said.
