The King’s Fork High School golf team took fourth place and produced three individual regional qualifiers in the two-round Conference 17 tournament that unfolded on Tuesday and Wednesday at Bide-A-Wee Golf Course in Portsmouth.
“It was a very, very good performance,” Bulldogs coach Calvin Mitchell said of his team. “Everybody shot lower than they started out the year.”
The King’s Fork golfers qualifying for regional competition included junior Rebecca Dixon, junior Tyler Branch and senior Lindsay Carlesi.
Dixon, a first-year golfer, had the fifth-best score out of all Conference 17 golfers competing in the tourney, shooting an 83 on Tuesday and a 78 on Wednesday for a two-day score of 161.
“She played excellent in the tournament,” Mitchell said, noting she does not hit the ball long, but she keeps it down the middle of the fairway, gets on the green and needs only one to two putts to find the hole.
Great Bridge High School’s Kendall Turner was the medalist, with a two-day score of 148.
The top six individual golfers were first-team all-conference selections, while the next six made the second team, including Tyler Branch, who had a two-day score of 178.
Carlesi produced a 203 two-day score.
During the regular season, King’s Fork went 3-11 overall and 2-3 in the conference, good for fourth place.
The Region 4A East tournament is set for Oct. 5 and will be held on the Tomcat Course at the Oceana Naval Air Station.
