Many children are dismayed by the thought of ripping open a gift on Christmas morning and finding socks or clothes.

However, Christmas wishes for some are simpler than others, and some of the children in the annual “Shop with a Cop” event actually picked out socks and clothes for themselves.

“We always like to help the younger kids that are less fortunate and don’t get anything for Christmas,” said Al Bremer, a retired Suffolk Police detective. “It’s a pleasure to be able to help them.”

The annual event is a project of the Suffolk Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 41. It has about 75 members. The children who participated were nominated with the help of social services and various members who knew of families in need.

“I’m grateful that they do this,” said Winonah Ellis, who watched her daughter and two sons pick out toys with Sheriff’s Deputy Sandy Toby.

Debbie Salley said she contacted Suffolk Police Sgt. Herman Kee a couple of months ago because she and her husband were having financial troubles and knew they wouldn’t be able to afford Christmas gifts for their four children.

“That would have been so sad for them,” Salley said. “When they get good grades in school, you just want to make them happy. I’m just happy for them.”

Toby said she enjoys doing the event every year.

“I really do enjoy all the community service we do,” she said. “We’re very involved in things to get us each out into the community and help where we can.”

The event was held at Walmart Friday evening, and several retired and active law enforcement officers came out to help about 25 children shop.

Each child had a $100 budget to buy for themselves and their families. The total came to about $2,165.

Bremer said the event helps children see law enforcement officers in a positive light.

“We’re here to help them, not hurt them,” he said.
