R. Stephen Best has been appointed to TowneBank’s Portsmouth/Suffolk board of directors.

Best is chief executive officer of the Southeast Virginia Community Foundation. He previously served as fire chief for the city of Chesapeake.

Best was named First Citizen of Chesapeake in 2015 for his many contributions to his community. He is active in the Chesapeake Rotary, the Boys and Girls Clubs, the Chesapeake Public Schools Education Foundation, the Chesapeake Regional Health Foundation and the YMCA of South Hampton Roads. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Christopher Newport University and an M.B.A. and a Juris Doctor from Regent University.
