A Suffolk man was sentenced this week to serve three years for the arson of his own home.

Michael Lee Moring, 63, was sentenced to three years, with 17 suspended, for the fire that occurred on March 6, 2015, at the home in the 3500 block of Knotts Neck Road, according to a city press release. He was an owner of the house.

The fire was reported at 1:21 p.m. that day, and the first units arrived five minutes later. The two-story home with basement garage was fully engulfed by the firefighters arrived, according to the city’s press release on the day of the fire.

The home was declared a total loss. A restitution hearing related to more than $500,000 in damages resulting from the fire is set for April 20, according to the release.

Moring entered an Alford plea to the charge on Dec. 3, according to an online court information system. An Alford plea does not admit guilt but acknowledges there is enough evidence for a conviction.
