IW plans business programs

A workshop today for entrepreneurs in the food industry and a program next week designed to help businesses learn to expand into international markets are among the free business-related offerings by Isle of Wight County Economic Development this month.

The Food Biz 101 Workshop is set for 8:30 to 10 a.m. today in the Isle of Wight Rescue Squad building, located at 13080 Great Springs Road in Smithfield.

Virginia Small Business Development Commission retail and restaurant consultant Marc Wilson will how to get products into distribution, how to choose locations, how to hire and manage staff, how to attract customers and more.

Following the workshop, Wilson will be available for free business consultations for those with appointments.

On April 27, from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m., IW economic development officials will host a program — along with the Virginia Economic Development Partnership — to help local businesses learn how to grow internationally.

Speakers will include IW Economic Development Director Tom Elder, Russ Young from the Port of Virginia, Stephen Versen from the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Community Services and Jordan Watkins of the Virginia Economic Development Partnership.

Companies new to the global market, along with experienced exporters, manufacturer, agribusinesses, food manufacturers, defense contractors, technology and service exporters are encouraged to attend.
