A Virginia Beach couple was rescued from a sinking boat at Lone Star Lakes Park on Sunday evening.

The boaters called 911 about 6:30 p.m. when their rubber Zodiac boat struck something in the lake and began losing air and taking on water, according to a city press release.

The first units on scene, from the Chuckatuck Volunteer Fire Department, arrived at the shoreline at 6:40 p.m. A Suffolk Fire and Rescue engine and Zodiac boat were on their way, but crews borrowed a jon boat from a family that had just returned from fishing and headed out with that. The couple, who were both wearing life jackets, were found clinging to the deflated boat about 200 yards offshore.

They received emergency medical assessment and blankets due to the cold water temperature, but they did not require medical transportation, according to the press release.
