A historic women’s group in Suffolk is preparing for an annual fundraising sale.

GFWC Junto Women’s Club members will hold their annual flea market on July 22 at Oakland Christian Church, located at 5461 Godwin Blvd., in the Chuckatuck community. Goods will be sold from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Items donated by the Chuckatuck community will be up for sale, including “fine flea” upscale items, flea market chairperson Judy Arnold.

“It’s a quality flea market, and there’s a wide assortment of items,” Arnold said.

The member bake sale will have bread, cakes, pies and other treats for customers to enjoy as they peruse items such as gardening tools, clothing and household furniture.

“There’s a really nice dining table,” Arnold said.

The GFWC Junto Women’s Club, which currently boasts 51 members, was founded in 1927, named after the literary society Benjamin Franklin founded with colleagues in 1727. The club helped establish the Chuckatuck Library in 1983.

Proceeds will go toward community service projects, including the $1,000 scholarships the club awards to local high school students.

Proceeds will be donated to the Genieve Shelter in Suffolk, which helps families and individuals escape domestic violence, sexual assault, human trafficking and stalking. The CE&H Ruritan Club’s fireworks fund will also receive some of the proceeds, according to Arnold.

This is her fourth year as a member of the Junto Women’s Club.

“I love it, because it’s primarily a service organization,” she said. “I really like the community projects that we do.”
