Suffolk officials helped staff cut the ribbon on a packed Tuesday opening for the city’s first Metro Diner location. Customer enjoyed specials like blackened shrimp quesadilla with black beans, grilled onions and melted cheese, plus garden salads loaded with fried chicken tenders and tossed in buffalo sauce.

But those were just the lunch specials. Each weekday comes with breakfast and dinner specials as well.

“You don’t leave hungry at Metro Diner,” said Paul Diorio, joint venture partner with Metro Diner.

The fifth Virginia location for the sit-down, comfort food destination is located at 2051 Sun Harbour Ave. in one of the two new retail buildings developed by Atherton Construction and Development on Harbour View Boulevard.

The 3,800-square-foot diner seats more than 100 guests and serves made-from-scratch breakfast all day along with lunch and dinner delights. The restaurant was featured in an episode of Food Network icon Guy Fieri’s popular “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives.”

“We are excited to be opening a new location in Suffolk,” Suffolk Metro Diner Managing Partner Brad Tanner stated in a press release. “Suffolk is a fast-growing community with an appreciation for good, classic diner food, and we hope to continue to satisfy their appetites with our creative twists on old favorites. We look forward to joining this amazing city and sharing our delicious menu.”

That menu features classics like crab cake benedict, Holy Davoli burger and rich meatloaf. There’s Charleston shrimp and grits and fried chicken with waffles, house-made strawberry butter and sweet-and-spicy sauce.

“All I’ve heard about is the meatloaf, crab benedict and all the other good stuff,” said Mayor Linda T. Johnson.

Tanner said the large portions and affordable prices are great for families on a budget, with most dishes priced under $15 each. The diner also held two pre-opening nights to benefit the Bennett’s Creek Sertoma and Navy League, raising nearly $4,000 and $3,000, respectively.

“It’s just giving back to the people that serve our community,” Tanner said.

The North Suffolk Metro Diner is open Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Call 785-4574 for more information.
