One dead, one injured in shootings

One person was killed and one injured in separate shootings that happened over the weekend in Suffolk.

Corey Lovell Baker, 30, died in the shooting at 2:34 p.m. Sunday in the 1000 block of Nansemond Parkway, according to a city press release. He was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Police identified Tavarus A. Gray Jr., 21, also of Suffolk, as a suspect. Warrants are on file for Gray on charges of second-degree murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, the press release stated. Gray reportedly fled the scene in a white panel van.

Earlier in the weekend, an 18-year-old was arrested in connection with a shooting that injured a man at Chorey Park Apartments.

Tony Powell Jr., of Suffolk, is charged with armed robbery, malicious wounding, shoot, cut or wound, shooting into an occupied dwelling and four counts of use of a firearm in commission of a felony.

The shooting was reported at 10:04 p.m. Friday at the apartments in the 800 block of West Constance Road.

The victim suffered a gunshot wound to the upper torso and was airlifted by Nightingale to a local hospital for treatment of serious injuries.

Both shootings are still under investigation.
