Credit union donates more than $871,000

Langley Federal Credit Union recently announced its 2018 combined giving efforts of the credit union and the Langley for Families Foundation was more than $871,000.

These funds were invested back into the Hampton Roads community to more than 100 organizations that provide services ranging from health care, housing, homelessness, disaster relief and hunger.

Langley Federal Credit Union distributed $401,000 to 64 worthy causes. The Langley for Families Foundation distributed $470,000 through successful fundraising events and community initiatives. The majority of funds were raised through a premier golf tournament known as the Langley for Families Charity Golf Classic, held in September.

In addition to monetary support, Langley’s employees volunteered 1,200 hours through events including the 94.9 The Point Radiothon benefiting Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters, the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Light the Night and the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk.

Highlights from Langley’s 2018 philanthropic impact include:

4A company food and fund drive that generated $30,000 and more than 2,000 pounds of food to combat hunger to multiple food banks in the region, including the Virginia Peninsula Foodbank.

4$10,000 was donated to the American Red Cross to support disaster relief efforts after Hurricane Florence.

4The Langley for Families Payroll Deduction Program raised $41,425. With a dollar-for-dollar match from Langley Federal Credit Union, $83,000 was donated to 32 employee-recommended nonprofit organizations.

4$45,000 was awarded in college scholarships to: Langley’s Jean Yokum Scholarship, Christopher Newport University’s Luter School of Business Scholarships and Hampton University’s Business School Scholarships.

4$15,000 in $500 mini-grants was awarded to 30 teachers to support classroom projects from Williamsburg to Virginia Beach.

“While Langley is proud of our charitable efforts, the economic impact Langley delivers to the area is also profound, with more than $2.1 billion in member loans and deposits,” said Tom Ryan, president and chief executive officer of Langley. “These loans and deposits have empowered members to buy or refinance homes, purchase vehicles, send their kids to school and save for retirement. Langley plans to continue and expand both the charitable programs as well as the products offered to members in 2019 and beyond.”
