City Council approved a lease agreement with Suffolk BBQ Company Wednesday night.

Located at the Suffolk Executive Airport, Suffolk BBQ has been the operator at the airport since 2017. The lease term is for one year with an option for four additional years.

Deputy City Manager Kevin Hughes spoke on the lease agreement to the council.

“Although this is a new lease, in a lot of ways it’s a renewal of the lease since Suffolk BBQ has been down there since 2017,” Hughes said. “They have been a really strong partner for us down at the airport. They have been a draw for the aviation users as well as those that live around the area.”

Managing Partner Wayne Powers also spoke to the council expressing his gratitude.

“I like to say the Suffolk BBQ company looks forward to continuing our relationship with the city, with our customers, as with the crew at the airport,” Powers said. “We take our position as unofficial ambassadors for the city very seriously. We do our best to make air travelers, out of town guests feel welcome with the very first experience when they come into the first building.”

Councilman Donald Goldberg shared his positive experience at Suffolk BBQ.

“Mr. Mayor, I just want to say that I’ve been down there a number of times and had lunch and visited the site and it’s very good. It’s excellent,” Goldberg said.

“The people are very friendly. I like the idea of having the friendliness coming in on the airport, and I appreciate the effort that’s being done on you all’s part.”

Councilman Roger Fawcett also commended Powers on his work at Suffolk BBQ.

“I just like to extend a thank you for making Suffolk a place to want to be and to help service our new customers and people who travel through,” Fawcett said. “We eat your food on a regular basis. It’s very good and we encourage anybody else to go out.”

The ordinance was adopted on a unanimous 8-0 vote.
