Two logging trucks and three other vehicles crashed Monday morning on Route 460 in Sussex County, killing two people and injuring seven, state police said.

The crash happened just east of Waverly at 10:38 a.m. Route 460 was blocked in both directions in that area and was expected to be closed for several hours, state police spokesman Larry Hill said.

Investigators were trying to determine what happened.

&uot;Apparently, just prior to the crash, an SUV and one of the logging trucks made contact that led to the crash,&uot; Hill said. The driver of the truck was thrown from his vehicle as it overturned, and that driver and the driver of the SUV died at the scene, he said.

The driver of the second logging truck and the passenger of a wrecker also involved in the accident were flown to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital with serious to critical injuries, Hill said.

The drivers of the wrecker and a car were taken to Obici Hospital in Suffolk, along with three children who were passengers in the car, Hill said. Their injuries were not life-threatening, he said.

No names were released.

After traffic was rerouted, two tractor trailers became lodged on a steep incline at a railroad crossing, according to State Police spokesman Larry Hill. Two tow trucks had to remove them. Two trains had to be stopped while the trucks were removed.

Hill noted that in a separate incident in the afternoon on 460, a tanker truck lost control and went into a ditch.
