Warrior helping No. 3-ranked Captains

Christopher Newport’s men’s soccer team remained perfect on the season by winning the Marlins Classic Friday and Saturday at Virginia Wesleyan.

CNU, ranked No. 3 nationally in NCAA Div. III, beat two New Jersey colleges, Rowan 5-0 and Kean 3-1, to go to a 5-0 record.

Junior defender Trevor Moyer (Nansemond River) has started all five matches for the Captains.

Against Rowan, CNU led 1-0 before scoring four goals in the first 18:51 of the second half. CNU allowed no shots on goal for Rowan.

The Captains host the CNU Classic Friday and Saturday with 7 p.m. kickoffs for CNU both evenings.

Randolph-Macon scored a touchdown with 0:33 remaining to defeat No. 19 Johns Hopkins 41-37 Saturday in Ashland.

Senior cornerback Mark Jackson (Nansemond River) made three solo tackles for the Yellow Jackets.

RMC (2-0) hosts another non-conference opponent, Shenandoah, Saturday at 1 p.m.

Lynchburg’s women’s volleyball team went 3-0 this weekend to win its Lynchburg College Invitational. The Lady Hornets defeated Johnson and Wales, Randolph and Mary Washington.

Senior Michelle Boucher (Nansemond-Suffolk) is the leading hitter for Lynchburg (4-4) through eight matches. Boucher’s averaging 8.1 kills and 1.4 blocks per match.

Freshman Mackenzie Westfall (Nansemond-Suffolk) is one of two main setters for Union College’s women’s volleyball team early this season.

Westfall’s played in all 20 sets for Union, in Schenectady, N.Y., she’s averaging 14.3 assists and 5.0 digs per match. Union is 2-4 overall.

Randolph-Macon won a pair of soccer matches to win an invitational tournament in Ashland this weekend. The Yellow Jackets (3-2) beat Washington College 2-0 Saturday and won 2-1 in overtime vs. Ferrum Sunday.

Freshman Brock Barbeau (Nansemond-Suffolk) made his first collegiate start with RMC against Ferrum.
