High-ranked Captains keep winning

Christopher Newport’s No.2-ranked men’s soccer team rolled to 7-0 on the season with two easy victories in the CNU Classic Friday and Saturday in Newport News.

The Captains beat Marietta 4-0 Friday evening and Penn State-Altoona 6-1 Saturday evening. The Captains have outscored opponents 25-3 this season.

Junior Trevor Moyer (Nansemond River) is a starter as a defender for CNU.

CNU hosts Averett Saturday at 7 p.m.

CNU’s field hockey team also went 2-0 this weekend, winning home matches 1-0 over Lynchburg and 4-1 over Frostburg St.

Senior Katelyn Yandle (Nansemond River) scored her fifth and sixth goals of the year and added an assist in the Frostburg St. match. CNU outshot Frostburg St. 45-5.

The Lady Captains (6-1) play Virginia Wesleyan at the U.S. Field Hockey National Training Center Wednesday at 5 p.m.

Randolph-Macon improved to 3-0 and its best start to a football season since 1986 with a 42-14 win over Shenandoah Saturday in Ashland. The Yellow Jackets are No. 25 in this week’s d3football.com poll.

Senior cornerback Mark Jackson (Nansemond River) made four tackles and one tackle for loss Saturday.

RMC hosts Frostburg St. this coming Saturday.

Lynchburg won its seventh straight women’s volleyball match with back-to-back sweeps Saturday over Rutgers-Camden and Southern Virginia.

Senior Michelle Boucher (Nansemond-Suffolk) led Lynchburg (7-4) with nine kills in the Southern Virginia match.

Averett’s volleyball team won a pair of USA South conference matches Saturday in Raleigh, N.C., sweeping Mary Baldwin and Meredith.

Senior hitter Shannon Andy (Nansemond River) is averaging 6.0 kills and 1.8 blocks per match for Averett (10-4, 4-1).
