The Lakeland High School baseball team hosted the Indian River High School Braves on Friday and the Cavaliers were pleased to be able to change the number in the win column for the first time this season with a 6-3 victory.

“I think we did better playing as a team,” head coach Mark Pollick said. “We didn’t play as selfish as we normally do. We actually did the small things right — hit behind runners, moving runners. We actually practiced a lot with our hitting this week, and I think that paid off.”

The Braves took a 2-0 lead after the second inning, but then Cavaliers’ bats broke loose in the third. Junior Tyler McCaw got things started with a double, and eventually, he scored. Then, junior Jefferson Knight landed a base hit that scored two more runners to tie the game, 3-3.

After taking the lead in the fourth, Knight helped cement it in the fifth with a two-run home run, going 2-for-3 on the night with four RBIs.

“I was very happy for the three seniors that they did get at least this win,” Pollick said.

He was referring to Jared Bass, Colby Bennett and Michael Cox. Bass pitched a complete game, allowing six hits and throwing three strikeouts.

Pollick said that the game could help the team’s confidence as it navigates the remainder of the season.

“It was a good win,” Pollick said. “It’s not going to make a great season, but I do think it picked them up a little bit.

Lakeland (1-14, 1-13) will remain on its home field on Tuesday to play Hickory High School.
