The Suffolk Art League and Suffolk Art Gallery have a range of workshops and programs planned for children and adults this summer.

The Special Projects Quilting Class started last Saturday, teaching how to create family heirlooms in fabric with a variety of techniques and methods.

Those who didn’t sign up still don’t have to miss out — a second class will run on Saturdays, 10 a.m. to noon, Aug. 3-24. Registration is $30 for league members or $33 for nonmembers. July 27 is the deadline to register.

Another quilting class will run Thursdays, 10 a.m. to noon, from Aug. 22 through Sep. 12, catering to beginners and seasoned quilters. The four-week session costs $30 for league members and $33 for nonmembers, and basic sewing experience is required.

Young Artists classes will take place from 2 to 3 p.m. on July 17 and Aug. 21, featuring age-appropriate activities for ages 3 to 5.

Registration is $5 for league members and $8 for nonmembers, and the deadline is one week prior to class.

“Students will use their natural creativity while exploring a theme through a variety of art

materials each month,” a news release states. “All necessary materials provided. Dress for mess.”

Ages 14 and up can learn how to use complementary colors and about under painting during the Summer Pastel Workshop Series.

Workshops from 9:30 a.m. to noon run July 2 and July 16, costing $27 for league members and $32 for nonmembers. You can bring your own chalk pastels or pay $8. Experience is not required.

Summer Art Days are planned for June 27; July 11, 18 and 25; and Aug. 1 and 8. Ages 5 to 8 attend from 10 to 11:30 a.m., and ages 9 to 14 from 1 to 3 p.m.

Registration, costing $1, begins 30 minutes prior to each class. Classes are subsidized by the Suffolk Fine Arts Commission and Target.

Each day’s activity is self contained.

Art In Your Pocket, from 10 a.m. to noon on July 30, will allow ages 8 to 13 to create their own artist trading cards. The deadline to register is next Sunday, and it costs $15 for league members and $20 for nonmembers.

An art camp, themed “Suffolk Gallery of Modern Art,” will run Aug. 12-16. The program for ages 6 to 9 is from 10 a.m. to noon, and ages 8 to 12 from 1 to 3 p.m.

Registration is $45 for league members and $55 for nonmembers, due by Aug. 2, and materials are provided.

The camp will include everything from landscapes to cubism and painting to sculpture, according to the league.

The Summer Pastel Workshop Series starts Tuesday with “Opposites Attract,” using contemporary colors to explore under painting. July 2 is “Broad Strokes,” creating impressionist landscapes, and July 16 is “What’s Underneath,” using sandpaper and under painting.

Workshops, for ages 14 and over, will run from 9:30 a.m. to noon, costing $27 each for league members and $32 for nonmembers. Once again, bring your own pastels, or pay $8 to use those provided by the league.

Workshops and programs will be held at the Suffolk Art Gallery, 118 Bosley Ave. To register, send the student’s name, mailing address, email address and daytime phone number, along with the appropriate registration fee, to Suffolk Art League, P.O. Box 1086, Suffolk, VA 23439.
