Celebration Christian Church is hoping for blue skies for its Easter egg hunt April 4.

The church, which meets at Suffolk Family YMCA, will hold the hunt starting at 10 a.m. on a piece of land where it plans eventually to construct its own building.

The land is on Route 10 in Chuckatuck, across from Brown Lane.

“We’re planning on having a few games before the hunt starts,” said Kirk Dice, the Celebration’s lead minister. “Just simple games — nothing too big.”

The egg hunt will be in three or four age-appropriate sections, Dice said.

Last year, the first time the church held an egg hunt on their land, 10,000 pieces of candy were hidden.

But “it was cold, it was raining and we almost canceled it,” Dice said.

“We decided to go ahead and have it. I don’t think we had as many kids as we could have. We had around 70 kids turn up, which was awesome — we were happy with that.”

Dice said they don’t have quite that many “eggs” this year, “but we will have thousands.”

Celebration, he said, is “a church that asks the question: If our church closed its doors, would the community miss us?”

In fact, he said the vision for the new church building is more of a community center. “We have been talking about naming the building ‘Celebration Commons,’” he said.

Church members are steadily working toward raising enough money to make the dream reality, according to Dice.

In the meantime, he said, small groups within the church work to benefit the community in other ways, for instance, by organizing the Easter egg hunt, and helping Oakland and Elephant’s Fork elementary schools as well as Western Tidewater Free Clinic.

“We take meals to them each month,” he said of the work with the clinic.

Celebration Christian Church’s two Sunday services at the Y are at 9 a.m. and 10:30 a.m.

Dice said of April 4’s event, “We are just wanting to create a happy event for everybody’s children — that’s about it.”
