Quite pleased with the way the tournament went for his team, Nansemond River coach Shamus Riley said, “Overall, of course, with everyone making it to the championship, it was very successful.”

For a team that lost four of its top six players from last year, the Lady Warriors continue to impress, as Riley said he expected this to be more of a rebuilding year.

His No. 1 player last year was a foreign exchange student who has now returned to Germany, but Bonney has shown herself to be a rising star for Nansemond River.

As the No. 1 singles seed in the tournament, Bonney had a first-round bye and then defeated Lakeland High School’s Payton Kerlee 6-0, 6-0 in the quarterfinals.

Riley had confidence in Bonney and said, “She just had to get past (Randi) Fiel from King’s Fork (High School).”

Bonney did that in the semifinals, winning 6-0, 6-1.

In doubles, Bonney and McCoy had a first-round bye, then defeated King’s Fork’s Fiel and Kayla Mercer 6-1, 6-1 in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, the Nansemond River duo beat Heritage High School’s No. 1 doubles team 6-0, 6-1.

McCoy had a remarkable run during the singles tournament, particularly since she is only a freshman.

“She played some tough competition to actually get to the championship,” Riley said.

She beat a player from Heritage in the first round, 6-0, 6-1, and then topped the No. 1 player from Denbigh High School 6-3, 6-3 in the quarterfinals. She had to face Lakeland’s No. 1 player, Samantha Nelson, in the semifinals, and came away with a 6-0, 6-3 victory.

Nansemond River’s No. 2 doubles team, featuring seniors Laura Ortiz and Jynasia Sadler, also had a tough road to reach their final.

The team, which was seeded seventh, defeated a 10th-seeded Heritage team 6-1, 6-2 in the first round, and then it had a dramatic showdown with a second-seeded Lakeland team in the quarterfinals. It was the Lady Cavaliers’ No. 1 doubles team featuring Nelson and Kerlee.

Riley said that during the match, he had a talk with his girls and told them that they were seniors and this is when their heart would show.

Ortiz and Sadler lost the first set 6-0, bounced back to win the second set 6-3, but then they found themselves down 4-1 in the third and deciding set. They responded by claiming the next five games to win the match 0-6, 6-3, 6-4.

In the semifinals, Ortiz and Sadler defeated a No. 3-seeded Denbigh team, 6-4, 6-4.

No. 1 Nansemond River begins play in the Region 4A South team tournament on Monday at home against Hanover High School at 1 p.m.

Lakeland is the No. 2 seed and will be traveling to Midlothian on Monday to play at noon.
