The Nansemond River High School boys’ basketball team completed its second consecutive losing regular season on Thursday. But the Warriors the big comeback win snapped a five-game losing streak and sends them into the PenSouth Conference tournament with momentum.

Thursday was Senior Night at Nansemond River, and Warriors coach Ed Young said he asked his seniors, “How do you want to be remembered?”

Senior guard Torrence Williams seemed to speak on behalf of his fellow seniors with his play in the final minute of the Warriors’ game against visiting Warwick High School.

“Torrence Williams hit an in-lane jumper with 12 seconds to go off an inbounds play that gave us the 60-59 lead,” Young said, and that score became the final one moments later.

Williams finished the game with a career-high 21 points, shooting 7-for-15 from the floor, including 5-for-10 from three-point range, and 15 of his points came in the second half.

Senior guard Josh Covington scored 17 points, 15 in the second half, and he also had five rebounds, three assists and three steals. Sophomore center Resean White had a career-high 12 boards to go with six points.

Five of the Warriors’ six seniors on the roster saw playing time as part of the starting lineup, including guards Darius Jones, Colby Williams, Torrence Williams and Covington, along with center Savione Winborne. Senior forward/center Randall Dixon also hit the court later on and contributed to the win.

Warwick started the game on a 7-0 run, capped by a breakaway dunk from Raiders senior guard/forward Ray Rawles.

“They ended the quarter with a 13-4 lead, so it didn’t look good,” Young said. “We didn’t score until four minutes went by.”

Covington got his only bucket of the half and Dixon made a layup to put Nansemond River on the scoreboard.

Young said the Warriors’ defense tightened up in the second quarter, Torrence Williams hit back-to-back three-pointers at one point and the team won the quarter 13-12 to trail 25-17 at halftime.

Warwick opened the second half with another 7-0 run to take a 32-17 lead, but then the Warriors began to recover. Covington scored 10 points in the quarter, while Torrence Williams added five.

Young said the Raiders started the fourth quarter with a 43-37 lead, then went on a 5-0 run, “and we went back to switching our defense, and it caused them more confusion, and we got some key steals.”

Nansemond River’s own 7-0 run made it 48-45, and “it’s a whole different game now,” Young said.

The two teams fought down to the wire. Ray Rawles hit a free throw to give Warwick a 59-58 lead with about 20 seconds to go.

Shortly thereafter, Williams released his running one-hander in the lane for the deciding basket. The Raiders set themselves up for a potentially game-winning play with one second remaining, but Warriors sophomore forward Gerard Stringer stole the inbounds pass to end the game.

“Boy, that felt good,” Young said of the win, which snapped the longest losing streak the Warriors have had in his 12 years as coach.

No.-7 Nansemond River (9-12) will play Monday at 4:45 p.m. against No. 2 Hampton High School in the PenSouth Conference tournament at Menchville High School.
