Lakeland High School’s Damontra Milteer rushed for 373 yards and six touchdowns over Great Bridge and Deep Creek, leading to him becoming the Duke Automotive-Suffolk News-Herald Player of the Week.

Damontra Milteer is the senior stud running back for the Cavaliers. He is currently the leading rusher in the Southeastern District and even all of South Hampton Roads. Milteer rushed for 373 yards and six touchdowns, to help propel the Cavs to two wins in four days.

Milteer is not new to success. He was named a first-team all-district running back last season, and this year he is well on his way to that honor and possibly even more accolades. He is a vital part of the Cavs team, which currently sits at 4-2.

The offensive standout is also one of the leaders on the team. He leads by example, whether it be at practice or a game, rather than being very vocal.

“I like to lead by example; I really don’t talk much,” Milteer said. “I let my play do the talking for me. I like how the young and older guys look up to me and count on me. I never want to let them down.”

“Damontra is a special guy,” Cavs coach Kevin Knight said. “He practices hard every day. He had a good offseason and came into this year ready to go. He always wants to win. He’s the last guy to worry about stats.”

For those who are worried about stats, the Cavs running back now has 1,113 yards and 13 touchdowns through six games, including his last game, where he ran for 322 yards. He averages 185.5 yards per game. An individual goal of his was to break 1,000 yards, and he did it barely more than halfway through the season.

Milteer’s running style is pretty simple, in his eyes — once he sees the hole, he hits the hole.

“I credit my offensive line for giving me room to make things happen,” Milteer said. “It makes my job a lot easier.”

Friends and family motivate Milteer to be the best player he can be. His success makes them proud, and the feeling he gets from making people happy gives him motivation during practice and games. Their support makes the game easier for the running back.

“I look up to all of my family,” the Cavs running back said. “They all helped me get to where I am now. They support me no matter what I do. I always want to impress them.”

A hard worker and focused are only a couple words of the many that can be used to describe Milteer as an athlete. When he plays, all he thinks about is that he doesn’t like for anyone to outwork him. On and off the field, Milteer is humble in his demeanor. It even impresses his own teammates.

“Damontra is one of the humblest guys I have ever been around,” senior offensive and defensive lineman Garrett Whitley said. “He carries himself well and stays to himself. Always credits his offensive line when sometimes we don’t deserve it. He’s the true definition of a team player and hard worker.”

Though Milteer doesn’t have any formal college offers yet, he has received interest from schools such as Virginia State University, Old Dominion University, Hampton University, Virginia Union University and Chowan University. Wherever he decides to attend, he plans to major in engineering.

In his spare time, he enjoys time with his friends and family and playing PlayStation 4.

The Cavs recently lost to rival King’s Fork, but Milteer and the Cavs will be back in action at home against Hickory High School at 7 p.m. Oct. 14.
