The Lady Warriors and Lady Cavs faced off Thursday evening, with Nansemond River High School emerging victorious.

Nansemond River High School’s girls’ volleyball team extended its win streak to two games with its 3-0 defeat of Lakeland High School.

Lakeland is a scrappy team whose strength is in their serving. Lakeland played Nansemond River tough, but Nansemond River was able to defend its home floor.

“The girls have played really well the last two games,” Lady Warriors coach Nikka Gatling said. “They have been having a good time and playing well.”

Both teams have struggled to start the season. Lakeland has yet to get a win, while Nansemond River snapped a five-game losing streak just this week.

Leading the Lady Warriors has been Taylor Paquette. Senior co-captain Natalie Hawkins has also been a significant contributor, while young players such as Dee Dee Moore are proving themselves, too.

Gatling hopes Nansemond River can build off of its win.

Lakeland will face Indian River High School next, while Nansemond River will face King’s Fork High School. Both games will be played at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
