16 in county acquire farms

Since the Farm Security Administration farm ownership program began in Nansemond and Isle of Wight counties in 1939, farmers have bought 40 farms.

Twenty-four of these are in Isle of Wight and 16 in Nansemond.

The average acreage per farm is 109 acres, 44 of which is crop land.

The total cost of the land, repair to buildings and soil improvement amounts to $180,211.

Miss M. Virginia Allen, associate FSA supervisor, says that two FSA families buying a farm in Isle of Wight have paid their loan in full.

They are Mr. and Mrs. E. C. Williams of Carrsville, and James and Annie Evans of Walters.

Both of these families purchased these farms in 1939.

&uot;Their increased yield and income each year is an indication that building the land by use of lime, cover crops, and good rotation of crops pays,&uot; she continued.

Ralph Coggins, FSA Supervisor says in these two counties, they have paid about 400 percent of maturities.

Rug demonstration given at meet of Liberty Spring Club

The Liberty Spring Home Demonstration Club met Thursday afternoon at the home of Mrs. W. J. Winslow on the Whaleyville Road at which time demonstrations on rug making tufted bedspreads out of feed bags were given by Margaret Busher, county home demonstration agent.

The president, Mrs. Blanche Baker, was in charge of the meeting during which time a short business session was held.

It was deicided that the annual club picnic will be held August 17 at 7:30 p. m. at Culpeppers.

The meeting closed with the homemakers creed.

Those present were as follows: Mrs. Blanche Baker, Mrs. W. C. Riddick, Mrs. Nettie Arline, Mrs. N. H. Bradshaw, Mrs. Johnnie Oliver, Mrs. W. J. Winslow, Mrs. S. H. Rawles, and Miss Margaret Rusher.
