Suffolk to observe 200th anniversary

The Suffolk Rotary Club unanimously voted today to endorse and pledge their cooperation in a movement to celebrate the city’s bi-centennial in 1942. The motion was presented to the club by Dr. W.G. Gobbel after Col. Junius West called attention to the club that Suffolk is approaching its 200th anniversary and that some observances should be planned.

Softball league season continues Monday

The second half of the Suffolk softball league season will open here next Monday afternoon at Wellons Park. Planters Plant Highwaymen, Lions Club, Chamber of Commerce, Bankers, Peanut Pickers, Montgomery Ward and Vepco will keep their franchise in the league. The Rotary Club dropped out and were replaced by the Spivey Company.

Recent goings-on and goings-around

In local news, Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Keiter were recent visitors of Mrs. Keither’s mother, Mrs. Alice Holland. Mrs. P.C. Bradshaw visited relatives in Windsor Saturday. Little Geraldine Carr, who has been quite sick for the past few months, is doing much better.

Church celebrated at Riverview party

Miss Helen Estelle Church, whose marriage to Walton Stallings will take place in August, was the guest of honor this afternoon at a large event, given by Mrs. Banks Wilkins of Norfolk and Miss Edythe Ballard at the home of Mrs. W. Hatcher Key in Riverview. Around 100 guests called between the hours of four and six.
