Nansemond-Suffolk Academy softball stars Katie Peelen and Madi Wilson were named to the 2015 VISAA Division II all-state first team.

It was the first state-level recognition of their softball careers.

“I thought it was well-deserved,” Lady Saints coach Brittany Wilkins said. “Without those two, we wouldn’t have made it nearly as far as we did.”

The coach said Peelen, a junior, was named the team’s defensive MVP, while Wilson, a freshman, was named the team’s offensive MVP.

Peelen led Nansemond-Suffolk on the mound this season, going 9-6 with an earned run average of 2.5. She threw 89 strikeouts in 84 innings pitched.

When she was not in the circle, she played at first base and generated a .960 fielding percentage.

Offensively, she led the team with 12 walks. She also had 18 runs batted in and carried a .365 batting average, a .474 on-base percentage and a .460 slugging percentage.

Wilson played at catcher and had the highest fielding percentage on her team — .992.

Though she did not have the highest batting average for NSA, “She was still our clutch hitter,” Wilkins said.

Wilson led the Lady Saints with 29 RBIs and nine doubles. She also had two home runs, a .411 batting average, a .643 slugging percentage and a .444 on-base percentage.

Nansemond-Suffolk sophomore Delaney Taylor made the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association Division II all-state second team.

This season, she had a .420 batting average, a .579 slugging percentage, a .494 on-base percentage, and 15 stolen bases.
