Player of the Week

Following are this week’s nominees for the Duke Automotive-Suffolk News-Herald Player of the Week:

Harper Birdsong, senior for Nansemond-Suffolk Academy basketball: She helped her team open its 2015-16 season by winning the Virginia Episcopal School tournament last weekend. In the 61-42 title-game win, she led her team with 24 points and eight assists and co-led with eight rebounds. In the 79-42 semifinal game win, she led her team with 26 points, eight rebounds and five assists.

Matthew Shaffer, junior for Suffolk Christian Academy basketball: He helped the Knights start their conference schedule with a win on Monday, which got them back to .500 overall for the season with a 2-2 record. In the 52-30 home victory over Veritas Christian Academy, he led his team with 19 points to go with 13 rebounds.
