Nansemond-Suffolk Academy sophomore Emerson Puzey prepares to release a pitch against visiting Hampton Roads Academy on Tuesday.

The Nansemond-Suffolk Academy softball team made the most of its first game since falling 9-2 to visiting Isle of Wight Academy on March 23.

The Lady Saints hosted Hampton Roads Academy on Tuesday and stormed to a 21-0 victory, accumulating six runs in the first inning and 10 in the second.

The victory put NSA back over .500 for the season, improving its record to 4-3.

“I think we’re just starting to come together,” Nansemond-Suffolk coach Brittany Wilkins said. “Bats are starting to come alive.”

The Lady Saints were supposed to have played Southampton Academy on March 29 but the game was canceled, so NSA has had some time to think about what it could improve on after the loss to Isle of Wight and its senior pitcher, Trish Webb, of Suffolk.

“That pitcher’s good, and she’s smart, and she got ahead, and then we just chased all of her pitches,” Wilkins said.

Webb logged 12 strikeouts in the game.

Wilkins said that since then, she has emphasized to her players in practice having a smarter approach at the plate, and the loss to the Lady Chargers fueled their fire on Tuesday.

NSA sophomore Madi Wilson was 3-for-3 with four runs batted in, junior Delaney Taylor was 3-for-3 with two doubles, a single and two RBIs, eighth-grader Addy Greene was 3-for-3 with two RBIs and sophomore Dani Goodman was 2-for-2 with two RBIs.

Sophomore Emerson Puzey got the win on the mound, pitching the entire game and throwing nine strikeouts.

“I’m hoping to see good things throughout the next couple of weeks,” Wilkins said. “We’ve got a busy couple of weeks.”

This week, Nansemond-Suffolk hits the road to face Norfolk Collegiate School on Wednesday and Collegiate School in Richmond on Friday. Next week, the Lady Saints have five games on the schedule.
