Lady Saints peak at right time

After starting the season 0-2, the Lady Saints field hockey team has ripped off a three-game win streak that they want to continue. Their most recent win came against Southampton High School, in which they dominated 12-0.

“The girls have been working so hard in the off season and the pre-season, and it’s paying off,” coach Ashley Skinner said. “The chemistry on the field is starting to come alive.”

Nansemond-Suffolk Academy prides itself on total team effort, and that’s exactly what they received on Wednesday. Seven different players scored goals, and three scored multiple times on Wednesday.

“We have developed some great passing combinations,” Skinner said. “We are starting to show more that we trust each other.”

As a coach, Skinner is proud of the team she has, because every player is so versatile. Because the team doesn’t have just one solid player to rely on, but instead multiple, is hard to come by.

“I’m just glad I get an opportunity to coach a group of girls like these,” Skinner said. “I’m glad I can trust a group of girls who are willing to compete hard and trust each other.”

The first two games for the Lady Saints weren’t blowouts. In their first game, they lost 2-1 to Virginia Episcopal School, and their second loss was to North Cross School 1-0. In those two games, NSA had traveled around four hours that weekend, and played both teams on back-to-back days.

“Our first two games were basically about finding our comfort zone and awareness on the field,” Skinner said. “We were really trying to gauge where to use each player best.”

It is evident now that NSA is finally starting to figure out who they are and are meshing well.

“We have a very competitive week ahead of us next week,” Skinner said. “Going into next week with momentum is going to be good for us. This is a good time for us to gain some speed. The next couple of weeks of our schedule are really going to show what we are made of.”

Next Friday, the Lady Saints will get another chance to play against Virginia Episcopal during a tournament at Cape Henry High School.

“We are making strides in the right direction,” Skinner said. “We will try our best to sustain the good things we have been doing.”

Next week, NSA will play at home against Norfolk Academy at 4 p.m. Tuesday. On Sept. 16-17 they will play in the Cape Henry Hockey Round Robin at Cape Henry. Their three opponents will be Virginia Episcopal School, Foxcroft and Cape Henry.
