Cavalier champ starts season

St. Augustine’s junior Chris Copeland (Lakeland), the defending NCAA Div. 2 national champion in the high jump, won his first meet of the new indoor track season Sunday at Christopher Newport.
Copeland cleared the bar at 6-feet-11.75, two inches better than the rest of the field at the CNU Holiday Classic. Copeland jumped 7-feet-0.5 in winning the indoor national championship last year and 7-feet-2.25 to finish second in the nation in the outdoor season.
Norfolk State sophomore John James (Nansemond River) finished sixth with a best of 6-feet-6.
Sophomore James Taylor (Nansemond River) had two top results for the Spartans. Taylor was runner-up in the 60-meter dash in a time of 6.76 seconds as NSU swept the top three spots in the 60. Taylor finished fourth in the long jump at 23-feet-9.5.
NSU freshman Ian Copeland (King’s Fork) finished seventh in the weight throw at 46-feet-2.
In college basketball action over the weekend the No. 12-ranked Georgetown Lady Hoyas improved to 7-1 with a 64-49 win at Wake Forest Saturday.
Sophomore TaShauna Rodgers (King’s Fork) led the Lady Hoyas with 20 points. Rodgers hit 3-of-6 three-pointers and 5-of-5 free throws.
South Carolina St. beat visiting North Carolina Central 66-32 Saturday. SCSU (2-3) outscored NCCU 32-9 in the second half. Sophomore point guard Trinese Fox (Nansemond River) had three points and three assists in 30 minutes for SCSU.
On the men’s side, Liberty (6-2, 2-0) edged Big South rival Winthrop 75-72 in Lynchburg Saturday.
Junior guard Andre Jones (Nansemond River) scored 23 points and 10-for-16 shooting with four assists for Winthrop (4-4, 1-1). Jones is averaging 21.3 points per game in the last three games.
Winthrop plays at Charlotte Tuesday evening.
