Marquette routs ranked Irish

Marquette upset No. 9-ranked Notre Dame (14-3, 3-2) and did so with a 79-57 rout Monday night in Milwaukee, Wis.

Marquette (12-5, 3-1) led from wire to wire but only by a 33-28 advantage at halftime. The Golden Eagles moved out to a 51-36 lead with 11:50 remaining in the game.

Freshman forward Davante Gardner (King’s Fork) played three minutes and didn’t score for Marquette. Gardner’s played in 14 games, averaging 5.5 points and 2.2 rebounds per game.

The Golden Eagles travel to face Louisville (13-2, 2-0) Saturday at 11 a.m.

Averett junior guard Kenny Hart (Nansemond River) moved into 14th place in the Cougars’ all-time scoring list with 16 points in Averett’s loss Saturday at Greensboro College.

Hart moved up two spots in the career list, including past current Averett assistant coach Ryan Frazier. Hart has 838 career points. He’s averaging 15.9 points, 5.7 rebounds and 2.6 assists a game this season. Averett is 2-13 overall and 0-2 in the USA South.

South Carolina St.’s women’s basketball team won its third straight contest Monday night, beating visiting conference foe Delaware St. 47-35.

Sophomore guard Trinese Fox (Nansemond River) scored eight points on 4-for-7 shooting in 38 minutes for the Lady Bulldogs (6-6, 2-0 MEAC).

SCSU led 18-15 at halftime and allowed no double-figure scorers for DSU.
